K. Kelkar Library
(Formerly Central Library) of the Indian Institute of Technology
Kanpur. P. K. Kelkar Library is housed with all modern amenities, and
is situated in a magnificent three-storied building covering an area
of 5730 square meters. The mission of the Library is to provide
information services and access to bibliographic, full text both in
digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and
information needs of all students, faculty members and staff. The
Library remains open, for 358 days of the year, from 8 a.m. to 12
midnight on all working days; 9 a.m. to 12 midnight on Saturdays; 9
a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Sundays and Gazetted holidays and for 24 hours
during the two examinations each semester.

INFRASTRUCTURE
P.k.Kelkar
Library caters information to support the teaching and research to
the students
having high bandwidth
computer network enabled with WiFi and VPN for accessing Library
E-Resources round the clock from anywhere. Library is fully automated
with high end
servers and more than 50 computers for in-house
operations with trained manpower.
BORROWING
FACILITY
- Books can be issued only against ID-Card issued by the IIT Kanpur to theborrowers.
- Borrowing privileges are given only to the Faculty, Visiting Faculty, Researchscholars, Staff and Students those who are registered in the libraryary.
- Books can be issued only against ID-Card issued by the IIT Kanpur to theorrowers.
- The ID-Card are non-transferable and their loss should be immediately reported tthe library.
- Reference books, Text books, unbound issues of journals, Periodicals, newspapers
- Books and materials kept on Reserve Section (Text books) will be issued only forhours and re-issued it before due period.
- The issue of library materials will be stopped at 9 P.M. on Monday to Friday,and at 4.00 P.M. on Saturday (No issue and return on Sunday & Instituteholidays).

CIRCULATION
Registered
members can issue books for home study except reference and text
books during circulation
hours.
Issued books can also be renewed online subject to the reservation
against the book and max. Limit.
COMPUTER
AIDED REFERENCE SERVICE
Users
can access to user terminals available in the CARS Division for
Library Catalog Search, accessing E-Resources, Databases, CD/DVDs
etc. These services are provided only 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM (Monday to
Friday). This facility is not available on institute holidays.
INTERACTION
SERVICES
This
service includes the following:
- Alert to renew Library materials before due date.
- Reminder to return/renew overdue Library Documents.
- Reserved books return Notice.
- Reserved book collect Notice.
- Weekly New Arrival alert.
INTER
LIBRARY REQUESTS
Library
facilitates to get the Books/Documents/Journal Article from other
Libraries which is not available in the Library collection.

members of P.K. Kelkar Library can refer for academic purpose the
Library resources by paying consultation amount. Persons would like
to avail this facility must bring a recommendation letter from the
Guide/Head of the Institution and an Identity Card.

PHOTOCOPY
SERVICE
- Photocopying of materials available in the library is provided on payment basis. This service is for I.I.T. Faculty, Students, Staff and outsiders/permit holders only. Please remember that photocopyingCirculation Division cater new members registration, issue/return of books, Displaying weekly new arrivals. It is fully automated for document circulation and also maintains a complete document is violation of copyright act.
- The photocopying machines are located in top floor adjacent to Business Office and another is in Basement of the library. Users are requested not to take out the materials from one floor to another floor for photocopying.
- Only 50 paise per page (one side) and 75 paise per page (Both side) are photocopy charge. Photocopy timing 9.00 AM – 9.00 PM (except Sunday and Institute holiday)

Books recommended for courses are kept in the Reserve Section. Text
books available in the sections are circulated within the Library.
The due period is 2 hrs and it must be reissued after the due time.
Users must strictly follow the Rules and Guidelines for optimum use

can contact the CARS Division for any Library documents if they are

acquires books through approved
vendors
and non approval books by placing orders. The faculty and staff
members can fill and sign the indent
form.
The form should also be signed by the DLC, or the acting DLC, or the
HOD, or the acting HOD. In the indent form, title, author, publisher,
edition, year of publication, no. of copies etc. will be mentioned
besides the nature of the book whether text books/

AUTOMATION
DIVISION
Library
Automation Division coordinates with LibSys Software, LSPremia a web
centric integrated library management software package is installed
for Library housekeeping operations. It also provides Web based
access to few bibliographic /Fulltext databases to users and
maintains Library web servers.

Computer
Aided Reference Service (CARS) Division caters required information
on catalog search, user orientation, maintenance of CD/DVDs and Inter
Library Loan requests.

CIRCULATION
DIVISION
Circulation
Division cater new members registration, issue/return of books,
Displaying weekly new arrivals. It is fully automated for document
circulation and also maintains proper record keeping. Users can use
online Library catalog for searching the Library collection. This
Division performs the following functions:
- Registers new members and renewal/extension of membership.
- Sends reminders through E-mail to return the books and renew the books online.
- Informs the members to collect the reading material against reservation.
- Recall notices to users for reserved books.
- Replacement of Lost Book and Lost Book Repayment for clearance.
- Issues the Library Clearance Certificates (No Dues).
- Checks incoming and outgoing materials thoroughly.

Rules
- General books are issued to all eligible members as per their entitlements.
- For the rules for replacement of lost book kindly contact the Assistant Librarian (Circulation).
- Loss of book must be reported immediately. Late fees, if any, will be charged till the loss of book is reported or settled..
- No book in damaged condition will be accepted from the reader. Mutilated or spoiled books will have to be replaced by the borrower.
- The readers should check the book thoroughly for missing pages, chapters, pictures etc., while borrowing the book.
- The borrowing facility can be withdrawn or restricted in case of misbehavior or misuse of the library.
- Reference books and periodicals are not available for loan.

DIGITIZATION
DIVISION
Library
has set up a facility for digitization in the year 2006. It has a
High speed Overhead Book Scanner (Minolta PS7000) to digitize the
collection and high end servers with all prerequisites. It maintains
repository of Electronic
Theses and Dissertations
and Faculty/Academic
Staff Publications
(set no proxy).

PERIODICALS
DIVISION
Aim
of this section is to provide inspiration, recreation and current
information to the readers. Due to vast knowledge explosion,
newspapers and periodicals literature has a very important place
these days in all fields whether it is Engineering and Technology,
Science, Arts or Humanities because readers more often get current
information from periodical literature rather than books.
Here
readers have access to wide range of journals and magazines,
newspapers and topics of relevant interest. For research purposes,
several periodicals are got bounded time to time and annually.
Current issue of the journals and magazines are being displayed on
the display rack.
Library
subscribes too many national and international periodicals. At
present, Library has subscribed 1950 Periodicals print, print +
online and online version and 12 Newspapers in print version.
Further, nearly 10,000 Journals in various fields are available
online through INDEST-AICTE
Consortium.
Back issues of subscribed print version periodicals are kept as
record and act as valuable source of information.
TECHNICAL
PROCESSING DIVISION
After
purchasing, accessioning of the reading material in the Acquisition
section, it is sent to the for technical processing for cataloguing.
Main responsibility of this section is to classify and catalogue the
reading materials. The reading materials are being classified
according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (23rd edition).
Library of Congress Subject Headings List is used for assigning
subject headings and entry in database library management
software(LibSys).
Library
materials which includes Text Books, General Books, Reference Books,
Gifted Books, Govt. reports, and special collections have been feeded
in the database.
Readers
are supposed to consult the computerized catalogue for up-to-date
information instead catalogue, where OPAC terminals have been
provided in the Library.

Guidelines
General
Library Rules
- The P K Kelkar Library follows an open access system except text books in the reserve section.
- Library is following Dewey Decimal Classification scheme (000 – 999) for the shelf arrangement of books.
- While entering the library, readers should leave their personal belongings, such as bags, brief-cases, personal books and parcels near the counter reserved for this purpose. However, they can carry loose papers note books and Laptop (without bag).
- Switch off your mobiles while entering the library.
- Books or other materials taken from the stacks should not be re-shelved by the readers. Books should be left on the reading table after use. (Please remember that a document misplaced is a document lost).
- Readers should maintain peace in the library and should not disturb other users in any way.
- Smoking and eatable items are strictly prohibited.
- Chairs and tables should not be disturbed from their position.
- Users should avoid resting their feet on tables, chairs, shelves, window sills.
- Readers leaving the library should allow the library/security staff to examine reading material their personal belongings.
- Issued materials should be protected from Rain, Dust, Insects, etc.
- Readers should not deface, mark, cut, mutilate or damage library material in any way. If anyone is found doing so, he/she will be charged the full replacement cost of the material.
- Change in Department, Status, E-mail, Address etc. to be informed.
- Personal papers and non-library materials should not be left unattended on tables.
- Do not move books/journals from its specific area to another area.
- Do not give Id-card to others.
- The holder of ID-Card is responsible for any book issued against it as shown by library records.
- If one book of a set is damaged or lost, the member concerned shall be liable to replace the whole set.
- If a book is not returned to the Library when due, an overdue charge of 20paise per volume per day.

- Outsiders are sign the register kept at the Check point, while entering the library.
- Show the documents which are being taken out of the library, to the staff at the check point.
- Contact the staff on duty/section staff for any queries.
- Keep the Library premises tidy.
